TAG
Keep a Tag on at All Times
It’s so important, it bears repeating. Dogs are most prone to escape in the first 72 hours as they are often confused, so this is critical to their safety. Many pet supply stores like Tailwaggers, Rosie Bunny Bean and Petco have tag engravers. You may choose to include the dog’s name, but please ensure your phone number is on the tag.
MICROCHIP
Register your Microchip
In the packet of paperwork from the shelter, you will receive microchip registration information. Please register with your current phone number and address. It is free. There are paid services that you can choose to upgrade to, but most adopters do not opt for these. Should you move or update your number, it is important to update your account in the online account too. Chips allow a vet or shelter to scan a lost dog, report the dog as lost, and the chip company to contact you. Your information will not be given out to the public.
INSURANCE
Consider Insurance
With the cost of care ever increasing, you may want to consider pet insurance. Some plans cover comprehensive care, others help in emergencies. There are insurance providers that specialize in pets and also options with more traditional insurance providers that can be combined with your rental, homeowners or even car insurance policies. Please take a moment to do some research and find the option that best fits your family. Often insurance is cheaper the younger a dog is so it can benefit you to begin a policy sooner or before any conditions arise.
